My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?

We are immensely proud to present the opening concert of our ninth season. Its centerpiece is Stuttgarter Psalmen, a true contemporary masterpiece by Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi. We have fallen in love with the variety of choral textures Mäntyjärvi employs as well as harmonies that straddle the divide between tonal and atonal. The second movement of this otherworldly, transporting piece lends its name to our concert’s title: My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?

Mäntyjärvi draws inspiration from the rich German choral tradition, so we will begin our program with Bach’s motet Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf. And we’ll close with Stephen Paulus’s stirring The Road Home, based on an American folk tune. On Sunday, October 28th, at 7:30pm we’ll perform in front of the sublime grotto at the Church of Notre Dame, the perfect place for this haunting and inspiring program.
